Review: The Lady : The Oath Duet

The Lady : The Oath Duet The Lady : The Oath Duet by Serena Akeroyd
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“I recognized how Fi had come into my life at the perfect moment. Where triumph was within my grasp, but the future was unwritten and could have led me down different paths, darker ones.”

The Lady picks up right where The Don ended. In this installment we see the evolution of Fi and Luciu’s relationship.

A relationship as opposed to a transaction is unchartered territory for Fi. As such, it has her emotionally flayed wide open. Although tough as nails, she struggles with the fear of being emotionally and financially vulnerable. Recognizing this, Luc chips away at her fears, proving she’s deserving of love, and that there’s a queen hidden just below the surface. As Fi finally accepts that she is worthy of love and can rewrite her story, it leads her to recognize that what she has with Luc is not like that of her previous marks. This epiphany allows her to settle in and accept her role by his side, while donning a ruby-studded crown.

Outside of the relationship, there are a lot of other things transpiring in The Lady as well. We peer into the family history and learn how Luc ascended to power. We also discover who the mystery woman is and her role in the Valentini family. Luc continues laying the groundwork for changes that will be implemented within his organization. We see which of the former families will stand by for the new regime. Likewise, we see how Luc interacts with the other players in the city and who will choose to align themselves with the Valentinis. Despite all that - and more - this second half of the duet dragged on a bit for me. Again, we experienced the evolution of the couple, but it was lighter on action and heavier on the world building. I’m not mad about it! I really like these characters and am interested in seeing more of them, especially some of the side characters like Rory. So despite the pace, I’m pleased with the way it wraps up.
