My rating: 3 of 5 stars
An interesting take on the vampire myth. With this fresh approach, there was a lot of information and peculiarities specific to this author’s vampires, to take in. As such, the first book in the series seemed a bit fast-paced. The tempo didn’t allow for as much character development as I would have liked to see. The attraction turned love between Shara and her “Blood,” Alrik and Daire, was virtually instantaneous. While I don’t take issue with instalove per se, I’ve not found it before in a series this long and would have expected more information up front to build upon.
That said, the smex was hot and a bit taboo, the story interesting, and the characters are all likeable so far. Shara is humble and kind, yet fierce in the face of the monsters who mean her harm. Ready to give their life for Shara if need be and serve her in ALL ways always, Alrik and Daire are solid, protective, and loyal. There is still quite a bit of history to be unraveled not to mention how Shara will reign in her tenure as queen. I'm interested to meet those who join the Queen’s service, to learn about her lineage, and find out more about the triune and competing queens.
