Cruel Games by Zoe BlakeMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
The spirited 18-year-old Aurora Barlowe has been unwittingly caught up in the sins of her (step-)father. The embezzlement, having been uncovered by the ruthless Roman Winterbourne, created an opportunity for him to take his pound of flesh.
Despite moments of submission, Rory is prepared to fight the Bastard Duke with her last breath. Conversely, Roman is manipulative and unrepentant, singleminded in his acquisition of the unsullied pianist.
This dark romance, with its parallels to Jane Eyre, is gritty and tantalizing. But don’t expect our antihero to soften along the way, you will not find a cinnamon roll here.
